The CSIR Seed Fund has been created to support pre-seed and seed activities within the organisation, with the intention to transform technologies into licensable or “investor fundable” opportunities. The CSIR Seed Fund kicked off in May 2012, with an initial total fund amount of R5 million. The initial fund amount was fully committed and invested in the 2012/13 financial year (ending March 2013). It supported a wide range of activities, from freedom-to-operate studies (FTOs) to internal incubation of start-up companies, prototype development, licensee interactions and negotiations, marketing and qualification.

Another R5m fund amount is being made available for the 2013/14 financial year.
